Abuja – Nigeria’s Supreme Court has cleared Imo State Attorney General C.O.C. Akaolisa, overturning a five-year professional ban. The Supreme Court lifts ban that the Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Committee (LPDC) imposed in July 2021. The LPDC had accused Akaolisa of improperly using his position to help free a murder suspect.
The nation’s highest court examined the case and found the LPDC’s decision was flawed. The court formally set aside the committee’s ruling against the Attorney General.
Court Finds Suspension Unjustified
The LPDC previously suspended Akaolisa from practicing law for five years. It cited “infamous conduct” related to the release of a suspect. However, the Supreme Court panel reviewed the arguments presented. They concluded Akaolisa’s appeal was valid. Justice Mohammed Baba Idris, leading the five-member panel, stated the appeal was “meritorious, and it is hereby allowed.” This ruling confirms the Supreme Court lifts ban.
Akaolisa’s Legal Practice Rights Restored
The court’s unanimous decision means Akaolisa can fully return to his legal career. “The decision of the Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Committee (LPDC)…finding the appellant liable…and suspending him…is hereby set aside,” Justice Idris declared. The final judgment means the Supreme Court lifts ban, ending the legal dispute over the suspension. Mr. Akaolisa is now permitted to practice law without restriction.
