Supreme Court to Review Legality of Ending Birthright Citizenship

Washington, D.C. – The Supreme Court will review lower court injunctions blocking President Trump’s executive order that aims to end birthright citizenship. The Justice Department appealed to the court, asking it to narrow the scope of these injunctions.

Constitutional Challenge

President Trump signed the order on his first day in office. The order seeks to end birthright citizenship for children born to undocumented immigrants or those with temporary visas. Federal courts in Maryland, Massachusetts, and Washington state blocked the order. Judge John Coughenour called the order “blatantly unconstitutional.”

The Justice Department argues the injunctions are too broad. Acting Solicitor General Sarah Harris stated, “Universal injunctions have reached epidemic proportions.” The 14th Amendment to the Constitution guarantees citizenship to anyone born on American soil. Trump’s order attempts to reinterpret this provision. The Supreme Court, with three justices nominated by Trump, will decide the fate of birthright citizenship.
