Umahi Rules Out Kanu Condition for Tinubu Backing

Minister dismisses South-East demands, backs president’s 2027 re-election bid

Lagos – Minister of Works David Umahi dismissed claims that the South-East demands Nnamdi Kanu’s release as a condition for supporting President Tinubu in 2027. The minister spoke to journalists Friday night in Lagos about regional political support.

No Conditions on Kanu Case

Umahi separated regional political support from the detained IPOB leader’s case. He said the South-East remains willing to negotiate Kanu’s release but rejects using it as political leverage.

“Somebody asked me about Nnamdi Kanu, and I said his matter is not a condition for the South-East to support the President. We are willing to negotiate his release, but no one should make it a condition because the President did not put him there,” Umahi stated.

The minister’s position removes a potential obstacle to regional support for President Tinubu while keeping room for separate discussions about Kanu’s detention.

Tinubu Performance Assessment

Umahi praised Tinubu’s economic reforms and international credibility. He acknowledged the president’s imperfections while highlighting achievements.

“President Tinubu may not be perfect, but he is doing most things right. Look at where he picked up the economy from. The international community has confidence in his reforms. That is why we are getting support for our projects,” he said.

The minister pointed to ongoing road rehabilitation projects in the South-East as evidence of federal commitment. He challenged critics to show their own contributions to national development.

South-East Representation Claims

Umahi rejected allegations of marginalization in federal appointments under Tinubu’s government. He said the South-East has fair representation at the federal level.

“The South-East now has a voice at the centre. We will not return to Egypt,” he stated, referencing the biblical story.

The minister praised regional governors for working well with President Tinubu across party lines. He emphasized political unity over partisan divisions.

2027 Political Plans

Umahi ruled out personal presidential ambitions for the 2027 election. He confirmed his commitment to supporting Tinubu’s re-election campaign.

“I will not run. I will work for my boss, President Tinubu. APC is the path to achieving what we want,” he declared.

The statement ends speculation about Umahi’s political future and could influence other South-East politicians considering their 2027 options.
