Vatican City – US Cardinal Robert Prevost is the new pope, the first American to lead the Roman Catholic Church. Prevost, 69, from Chicago, ministered in Peru and led a Vatican office. He chose the name Pope Leo XIV.
From St. Peter’s Basilica balcony, Pope Leo XIV said, “Peace be with all of you! May my message of peace enter your hearts, reach your families and all people, wherever they are.”

Prevost’s work as a missionary in Peru made his election as Pope Leo XIV a source of pride there. “For us Peruvians, it is a source of pride that this is a pope who represents our country,” said Isabel Panez, a Lima teacher.
The new Pope thanked the cardinals. He spoke warmly of Pope Francis and led the crowd in prayer.
