Washington, D.C. – The United States plans to cut funding for GAVI. GAVI provides vaccines to developing countries, including Nigeria. This cut follows efforts to reduce malaria programs and end many health projects. A US Agency for International Development (USAID) document shows 5,341 awards worth nearly $76 billion face cancellation.
Impact on Child Health
GAVI CEO Sania Nishtar warned the cuts will have severe results. “Without US support, 1.2 million children could die over five years. They will lack protection from diseases like measles and diphtheria,” Nishtar said. Nishtar stated GAVI needs the $300 million annual US funding. She and GAVI board chairperson José Barroso will travel to Washington. They will argue for continued funding.
Nigeria Faces Vaccine Shortages
The funding cuts threaten vaccine supplies to countries like Nigeria. Nigeria depends on GAVI for many vaccines. In 2024, GAVI supplied Nigeria with thousands of doses. These included Mpox, malaria, cholera, and meningitis vaccines. The US funding cut could worsen healthcare problems in Nigeria. Fighting diseases like malaria and measles may become harder.
