US Reviews Nigeria Foreign Aid, Condemns Boko Haram | 2025

The US government is investigating the use of past foreign aid in Nigeria and other countries, the United States Mission to Nigeria confirmed. This review follows President Trump’s January 20, 2025, decision to suspend all foreign aid for 90 days. The US cited concerns about global destabilization.

The US Mission to Nigeria posted on X (formerly Twitter). “Comprehensive monitoring and evaluation systems are in place to help verify that U.S. assistance reaches intended recipients,” the statement said.

The US also wants a review of U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) health funds. This will ensure accountability.

The U.S. Mission strongly condemned Boko Haram’s violence. “The United States condemns the violence and blatant disregard for human life perpetrated by Boko Haram and other terrorist groups in Nigeria and the region,” the mission stated.

Boko Haram is a major threat to peace in West Africa. The group causes displacement and suffering.

The U.S. Secretary of State designated Boko Haram a Foreign Terrorist Organization on November 14, 2013. This designation blocks the group’s assets and restricts fundraising. It also allows the US to prosecute its members.

The US reaffirmed its commitment to fighting terrorism. The government will work with Nigeria and other West African nations. The US stated that despite reviewing foreign aid, it will still support Nigeria’s security efforts.
