Lagos – Big changes are coming to West African exams. The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) announced its first-ever Computer-Based WASSCE for school candidates, launching in 2025. Dr. Amos Dangut, leading WAEC Nigeria, revealed this significant step during a press briefing, marking a move to modernize how students are assessed.
This new Computer-Based WASSCE is set for April 24 to June 20, 2025. An impressive 1.9 million students from over 23,500 schools are expected to participate. Notably, female participation continues to rise, with 994,025 females registered compared to 979,228 males. This highlights an important trend in regional education access.
A Fairer Test for Every Student
One key goal of the Computer-Based WASSCE is to tackle exam cheating head-on. How? By using unique question sets for every student. “Two candidates will not have the same questions on each number,” Dr. Dangut confirmed. This smart design aims to ensure a level playing field. WAEC stands firm against malpractice, warning that students caught attempting the wrong paper will face serious consequences. Dr. Dangut appealed to schools and families to help uphold exam integrity.

New Tools to Help Students Succeed
WAEC isn’t just changing the test; it’s providing tools to help students prepare. New digital platforms like the WAEC E-Study Portal and WAEC E-Learning Portal offer valuable resources. Students can find past questions and marking guides to sharpen their skills. For smooth logistics and security, WAEC is working closely with the Nigeria Police Force and State Governments. Students can expect results about 45 days after the final exam, with digital certificates available via the WAEC Digital Certificate platform within 90 days.
