Wike Demands Action: “Do the Right Thing” for State Peace

Abuja – Nyesom Wike, the former Rivers State Governor and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has publicly called on Governor Siminalayi Fubara to take concrete steps to restore peace within the state. This isn’t just a suggestion; it’s a clear directive.

Wike’s Conditions for Peace

Speaking to journalists in Abuja, Wike laid out his conditions plainly. He insists that Fubara must re-present the 2025 budget to the State Assembly, currently led by Martin Amaewhule. Additionally, Fubara needs to resubmit the list of his chosen commissioners for official approval. “What is peace?” Wike questioned. “It’s simple: doing the right thing. It follows when the right actions are taken.”

Wike was firm, emphasizing that true peace requires adherence to proper governance and established procedures. He directly challenged Fubara’s approach, stating, “If the right thing isn’t done, how can you claim to want peace? it is built on doing what’s right. Re-present the budget, submit the list of commissioners. You can’t operate outside the law.”

The Backstory: A Power Play Revealed

Wike also offered a glimpse into the political maneuvering behind Fubara’s rise to power. He revealed that he personally selected Fubara as his successor, despite facing opposition from some Ijaw politicians. He further commented on the regional political landscape, noting that the Ijaws constitute a minority in Rivers State, making Bayelsa their primary stronghold for securing the governorship. This adds context, this reveals a deeper power struggle within the state.
